Civilisation is mostly about social organisation. Preventing organisational failure is therefore a must of protecting our world.
Whilst poor management is generally acknowledged as the major reason for organisation collapse, very few of them do have official managerial guidelines, not to mention a unified management theory. Many of those who do have one focus on theory, numbers and process, leaving out the human part and therefore leadership.
Here is a website made by professionals of management who came up with a interesting way of doing things: www.manager-tools.com. Their approach is extremely comprehensive and people oriented. It is full of actionable items and avoid the pitfalls of being a collection of unrelated recipes or a mere theory. There is a lot of material, and years of experience for you to find there. The best thing is that they do not only tell you what to do, but how to do it.
Here is how it works: there are 4 main tools from which all of their management style come. All of them work together and their power comes form working hand in hand.
- One on one: a weekly half an hour meeting with each of the employees that directly report to you. Aimed at creating great professional relationship with them, and focused on the employee. This is the single most powerful tools of the lot.
- Feedback: shows someone the impact of their behavior, allowing them to change ineffective actions or continue doing things that help the team achieve its goals. No punishment, no praise, no order, no guess at the “motivation”
- Coaching: aimed at improving the employee’s behaviour/performance. The manager identify resources together with the employee to help him improve his performance. It is not the manager teaching. Sets measurable goals and focuses on behaviour
- Delegation: Should the second nature of every manager. It assigns responsibility, provides authority and requires accountability.
All of the behaviors and habits in the Management Tools are simple to understand, relatively easy to do, and give exceptional returns on a manager’s investment. And that’s why I recommend them.
With a bit of practice, this will be one of the most powerful tool you can find to keep your organisation going on the long time.
I do encourage you to have a look at their website. But beforehand, if you experience problems in your organisation and believe this approach could improve on them, I would love to hear from you. Please post your comments below.
